Cancún: Colosio Boulevard construction criticized due to tourist accidents

A traffic accident on Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard in Cancún, which left seven people dead, mostly visitors from the north of the country, and six injured, sparked a wave of criticism regarding the hydraulic concrete paving of Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard, Cancún’s main artery.

The fatal accident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 16, when a pickup truck traveling toward Cancún lost control after failing to take into account the wet pavement following the rain, according to an official report.

The vehicle crossed into the opposite lane and collided with another compact vehicle traveling toward the city’s airport. Six people were traveling in this vehicle, mostly visitors who had arrived from Monterrey to attend a wedding; all died.

The incident has once again brought into the public eye criticism over alleged errors committed during the multi-million-dollar renovation of this boulevard, which runs from Cancún to the International Airport or connects with Federal Highway 307 to the Riviera Maya.

Apparently, the hydraulic concrete tread on the Colosio Boulevard rolling lane was designed to run in the same direction as vehicular traffic, making it easier for cars to skid, causing several accidents. The road lacks an asphalt layer that allows for better tire grip.

“The tread on Colosio Boulevard was poorly designed, which means that every time it rains, the road becomes as slippery as butter. Added to this are oil stains that worsen conditions and turn this stretch into a death trap,” reported some local media outlets regarding Tuesday’s accident.

Authorities have disputed this version, stating that the accidents are caused by reckless drivers. It’s worth noting that the Grito de Independencia celebrations in Cancún left a fatal road death toll, with 12 traffic accidents that claimed the lives of at least eight people.

According to Bernardo Cueto Riestra, Secretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo (Sedetur), the Cancún hotel zone finalized its renovation budget in August, thanks to the transfer of its operation and maintenance from Fonatur to the Strengthening of Tourism Activity (Foatqroo). He assured that the results will gradually be seen.
