The recent creation of the Sonora Border Unit, the first of its kind in the country and attached to the Ministry of Public Security, received recognition from the United States Ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, during a working visit to the state. The unit has bases on the borders of Sonoyta and Agua Prieta, in addition to operating in coordination with the detachments established in San Luis Río Colorado and Nogales, and focuses its efforts on security, migration, drug trafficking, and civil protection.
The diplomat met with members of the unit, launched in August by Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño, with the goal of strengthening surveillance and assistance along the northern border. In his message, Johnson emphasized that this model reflects the cooperation between the two countries and underscored that its operation constitutes a decisive step in regional security.
“The Sonora Border Unit, the first of its kind in Mexico, reflects the deep cooperation between our countries. We collaborate with authorities to ensure our shared border is safer and stronger. I had an enriching conversation with them to learn more about their work,” he stated on his official X account.
The ambassador added that a secure border not only seeks to stop the illicit trafficking of drugs, weapons, and people, but also to promote bilateral trade and coexistence. “A secure border benefits both countries by creating an environment in which citizens can prosper,” he expressed.
In its first weeks of operation, the Border Unit has recorded significant seizures. On September 5, it seized 250 kilograms of methamphetamine and five kilos of fentanyl in San Luis Río Colorado, while on August 13, at the Cucapah military checkpoint, it seized 838 kilograms of methamphetamine, distributed in 1,863 packages hidden in a commercial shipment.
