Maruata, the virgin beach of Michoacán where the Pacific shows its wildest side

34

The state of Michoacán stretches along a wide stretch of coastline on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Along its more than 200 kilometers of coastline, the territory shelters beaches characterized by cliffs, strong waves, and rock formations.

Unlike other more crowded destinations, these areas are preserved in a natural state and showcase the power of the sea. A clear example of this is Maruata.

On the coast of Michoacán, far from the typical tourist centers, lies Maruata, a site that is one of the most spectacular yet least known in the Mexican Pacific. Famous for its impressive rocks, intense waters, and natural atmosphere, this place has become a point of reference for those who want to connect with nature in the most authentic way possible.

Maruata stands out for its very unique landscape: enormous rocks that divide the beach into small bays, golden sand, and an open sea that displays the full power of the Pacific. Without much development, this place has maintained a genuine charm, without the large hotels and resorts found on other beaches.

What to do in Maruata?

Explore the coves: The rock formations created by nature are ideal for discovering small bays where you can swim peacefully.
Admire the waves: The open central part of the beach is famous for its large waves, which attract more experienced surfers.
Camp by the sea: The beach has rustic areas where you can camp under the starry sky.
Try the local food: In the local palapas and fondas, cooks prepare fresh dishes such as fried red snapper and ceviche, with the authentic flavor of the Michoacan coast.
Maruata is a crucial nesting site for various sea turtles, especially the black sea turtle. During the season, local residents and environmental organizations join forces to protect the nests and help release the hatchlings, transforming the visit into an ecotourism experience.

This beach is located in the municipality of Aquila, about three hours from Lázaro Cárdenas and about six hours from Morelia. The journey is by road and passes through coastal communities that still preserve their traditions.
