San Cristóbal de Las Casas underwater, and abandonment

San Cristóbal de Las Casas, one of Chiapas’ most iconic tourist destinations, recently experienced a natural disaster that left destruction, property losses, and profound public outrage in its wake. The torrential rains severely affected local workers, who lost their street vendors, including traditional hot dog carts, as well as homes and even historic church facades.

However, this disaster could have been avoided or at least mitigated. Uncontrolled logging of hills and uncontrolled urban development have disrupted natural drainage and water absorption systems. The mountains surrounding the city, once protective, have now been destroyed in the name of “progress,” leaving San Cristóbal more vulnerable than ever.

Mayor Fabiola Ricci has been harshly criticized by the municipality’s residents, who accuse a serious lack of preparation and response to the emergency. The dredging of rivers and canals was not carried out before the rainy season, and the mayor demonstrated a worrying lack of direction during the most critical hours of the event, especially in affected areas such as the Guadalupe and El Carmen walkways.

Added to this is the silence of the state Tourism Secretariat, which so far has not presented an emergency plan to reactivate the local economy. Tourism, a fundamental pillar of San Cristóbal, is already showing signs of severe damage following the rains.

The tragedy experienced by San Cristóbal de Las Casas is not only the result of the force of nature, but also of political irresponsibility and a lack of environmental planning. Residents demand answers, concrete actions, and, above all, that the same story not be repeated every year: announced disasters, overwhelmed authorities, and a population that pays the consequences.
