Zihuatanejo has no negative effects during the low tourist season and remains in the top 10 for hotel occupancy nationwide.

The mayor of this tourism district, Lizet Tapia, said that to maintain the influx of visitors, air connectivity with domestic destinations as well as the United States and Canada is being strengthened. This also boosts the local economy.

She noted that Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo has a sustained annual average hotel stay of 70 percent, which has helped this district rank among the top ten destinations with the highest occupancy.

The mayor acknowledged that the rains significantly discourage tourist visits, and for two weeks in September, occupancy rates were low, reaching 32 percent.

However, during the national holidays on September 15th, they recovered again, and they expect the same to increase hotel occupancy by the end of the month.

She mentioned that to maintain tourism, they are promoting the local economy and generating activities, which also strengthen the current air connectivity with Mexico City, Morelia, Tijuana, Querétaro, and the State of Mexico.

Mayor Liz Tapia noted that the municipal government promotes events, and the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Hotel Association also aggressively advertises during the week.

“We promote local activities, and that encourages the people of Zihuatanejo to go out and generate economic circulation. That’s the way to counteract these difficult days of occupancy.”
