Mexico City’s business sector reported losses of 21.9 million pesos after the march marking the 11th anniversary of the disappearance of the 43 Ayotzinapa students, held on Friday afternoon.

March affects 4,527 businesses

In addition to the economic impact, the National Chamber of Commerce, Services, and Tourism of Mexico City (Canaco CDMX) reported that the September 26 demonstration affected a total of 4,527 businesses, service businesses, and tourism businesses.

During the demonstration to commemorate the events of September 26, 2014, in Iguala, Guerrero, some attendees damaged furniture, painted graffiti, and looted businesses along the route, which began at the Angel of Independence Square and ended at the capital’s Zócalo.

The Canaco (Mexico City Police) in Mexico City expressed in a statement that Friday’s acts of vandalism are reprehensible and called for their condemnation.

“Unfortunately, the so-called black bloc took advantage of the demonstration and the inaction of the authorities to carry out acts of vandalism, which must be strongly condemned by all citizens,” stated the Canaco of Mexico City.

Despite the protective fences around hundreds of businesses in the Historic Center and Paseo de la Reforma, some of those attending the march for the disappearance of the 43 students caused damage.

This damages the image of the country’s capital ahead of the World Cup, to be held next year, warned the Canaco.

“They also damage the image of security and mobility in our beloved Mexico City, an issue that should seriously concern us, especially ahead of the 2026 World Cup.”

The National Chamber of Commerce, Services, and Tourism of Mexico City also stated that marches demanding clarification of the disappearance of the 43 students “are frequently kidnapped by radical groups seeking to sow chaos and cause harm to citizens.”

One day after the march, several businesses and government buildings in the capital and the federal government remain protected by fences, while others are already operating normally.
