A plane on Periférico Sur? An aircraft appeared parked in San Jerónimo, to the astonishment of passersby.

Did it run out of gas? Several people were surprised to see a plane on Periférico Sur, near San Jerónimo, in the Magdalena Contreras borough of Mexico City.

Since the morning of Saturday, September 27, social media users reported that a plane was parked on the side of Periférico Sur. The incident caused astonishment… and quite a bit of traffic.

The photos show the aircraft as a Boeing 737. The images circulating online show several people around the trailers: one contains the plane’s fuselage and the other the wings.

Plane on Periférico Sur ‘takes off’… to a Utopia

According to media reports, it is the fuselage of a Boeing 737. The plane will be transferred to the El Oyamel Utopia, under construction in the Magdalena Contreras municipality.

According to Televisa, the plane departed from the “aircraft cemetery” located in the eastern part of Mexico City.

The Mexico City government reported that the El Oyamel Utopia will have a space of more than 22,000 m² and will feature a semi-Olympic pool, a multifunctional gym, a tartan track… and a library plane!

What will be in the El Oyamel Utopia, in Magdalena Contreras?

In June 2025, Mayor Clara Brugada announced the construction of the El Oyamel Utopia in Magdalena Contreras.

According to the city government, this Utopia will feature a semi-Olympic pool, a multifunctional gym, a tartan track, a boxing ring, a library-airplane, a viewing platform with telescopes, and multiple recreational areas.

The El Oyamel Utopia is one of the 16 that the Mayor promised to build in Mexico City.

“The Utopias are a project of profound urban and social regeneration, with multiple benefits for the population. It is very important that this project begins with a process of citizen participation,” said Clara Brugada when announcing the construction of the Utopias, in June 2025.
