Carla López-Malo, the state secretary of tourism, sparked criticism after posting a video on her TikTok account in which she is seen posting stickers promoting Puebla in various locations and streets in Paris, France.
After social media users criticized this action, considering it a lack of respect for the public space of the so-called City of Light, the Puebla government issued a statement asserting that the official “did not violate any regulations, since all the stickers used in her video were superimposed, immediately removed, and used only for the video.”
López-Malo represented the state of Puebla at IFTM TOP RESA in Paris, France’s most important tourism fair. As part of her supposed promotion of the state, she recorded the video, in which she placed stickers reading “Puebla, the heartbeat of Mexico” and “I love Puebla” on posts, walls, signs, and streetlights.
Following the criticism it sparked, the Secretary of Tourism removed the video and later re-uploaded it with the clarification that “all stickers were superimposed, immediately removed, and used solely for the production of this promotional video.”
López-Malo had previously sparked controversy in the media for wearing clothing and shoes that did not meet the standards set for the 4T (Tourism and Development). For a video recording in the capital’s main square, she wore Chanel loafers, priced at more than 33,000 pesos, and, among other things, wore a Van Cleef & Arpels bracelet worth more than 113,000 pesos at a press conference.
López-Malo also sparked controversy when Governor Alejandro Armenta snapped her fingers during a press conference, and in response, she posted a message of praise for the president on social media.
“Governor, you are a leader of integrity, approachable, and deeply respectful. The teachings you share, like those of your grandmother, reflect the values that guide you and also inspire your team. I appreciate the trust you place in me and in so many young women who today have a voice and responsibility in this government,” she said.
