Presiding over the session of the Advisory Council of the Integral Port Administration of Tamaulipas, Puerto del Norte, Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya reiterated his commitment to supporting the necessary procedures and authorizations to continue promoting this major project, which offers high returns for national development and will allow Tamaulipas to become the country’s main maritime border.
During the Council session, held today in the Independence Hall of the Government Palace, and accompanied by the Secretary of Economy, Ninfa Cantú Deándar, and the General Director of API Tamaulipas, Gustavo Guzmán Fernández, the Governor praised the quality of the contributions from each of the council members, who presented proposals, alternatives, and projects to strengthen the Puerto del Norte in Matamoros.
“You have truly contributed to our work this afternoon, and also through your meetings, which I receive via Gustavo (Guzmán), in some of the assessments and decisions made by the State Government. You are providing invaluable support for our port, which is also yours, for the development of our state and, of course, our country,” he expressed.
He added: “Tamaulipas has everything it needs, and it is time for it to progress as well. I am fully convinced that, just as Tamaulipas is currently Mexico’s main land border with its binational economy with the United States, with the port of Matamoros operational, Tamaulipas will become Mexico’s first and most important maritime border with the world.”
Addressing the topic of legal and administrative strategies and procedures, Councilor Teodoro Zamudio Moreno recalled that, from the beginning of his administration, Américo Villarreal got to work, and today, thanks to his efforts, the Port of Matamoros is beginning to bear fruit for the region, achieving a long-postponed dream of almost 25 years, with the arrival of a ship on August 2nd.
“I am also certain that in the history of Tamaulipas you will be remembered as the governor who did not turn his back on the sea. Congratulations on that, I truly mean it. Today we can proudly inform you that, thanks to your leadership and the collaborative work of this entire team you have assembled, the Port of Matamoros has been stabilized, it has been moved out of intensive care and is now operating normally, Doctor.”
For his part, Gustavo Guzmán Fernández emphasized that the Northern Port is a well-established project with a promising future for continued investment, as it has been receiving investment to date. He noted that the project has met all environmental and financial requirements, and that bathymetric studies have been conducted to determine the depth of the navigation channel.
During the working meeting, Councilor Eduardo Garza Robles highlighted that Tamaulipas is experiencing its best moment, as its strategic location, customs network, and the consolidation of the Northern Port give it the potential to become Mexico’s major logistics hub. He explained that it is not only an infrastructure project but also a key component for connecting maritime routes with the land border under an intermodal logistics model that strengthens the entire northern region of the country.
“Tamaulipas is no longer just a transit border; today it is a central axis in Mexico’s logistics and customs chain, and it is destined to be the country’s most efficient gateway to global markets,” he stated.
For her part, Councilor Luz Alicia Iturbe De Garay acknowledged Governor Américo Villarreal’s vision, which enabled the revitalization of a port that had been inoperative for over 20 years, receiving no ships. “A port that did absolutely nothing,” she said. “Today we are witnessing a phenomenon where we are giving birth to and bringing back to life a port that didn’t exist as such, even though it was officially designated; it never functioned, never operated, and never handled any cargo,” she stated.
Also present at the meeting were the Mayor of Matamoros, Alberto Granados Fávila, and, representing the State Government, the Secretary General of the Government, Héctor Joel Villegas González, and members of his cabinet.
