The organization Melel Xojobal stated that so far this year, it has documented the “unpunished deaths of 79 children and adolescents” in Chiapas.
It added that of that number, 49 died violently in traffic accidents, and 10 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17 were victims of homicide in the municipalities of Chilón, Reforma, San Cristóbal, Sunuapa, and Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
On the Day of the Dead, it reported the femicide of six girls and adolescent women in Frontera Comalapa, Ixtapa, San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chamula, Mapastepec, and Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
It specified that five of these cases involved firearms, and the victims included girls as young as seven and a pregnant teenager.
Furthermore, it added in a statement, 14 children and adolescents were victims of manslaughter.
“Femicidal violence left 21 children and adolescents orphaned by the femicide of their mothers, according to figures from the Gender Violence Alert of the State of Chiapas as of September 2025,” stated Melel Xojobal, which created a “mobile altar” and another “in memory.”
The group, which works with children and adolescents, affirmed that “impunity is widespread and interconnected,” while also asserting that “those directly responsible for the violence often enjoy protection and impunity, and there are no real strategies to address the root causes of these deaths.”
