New Metrobús in Tampico: find out which stations, stops and terminals will be included

2

The new Metrobús or BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) system in Tampico will begin construction in early 2026 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. Its goal is to improve traffic flow on Avenida Hidalgo and offer a modern, sustainable, and efficient transportation alternative for residents of Tampico, Ciudad Madero, and Altamira.

During the International Congress on Urban Planning, the Secretariat of Urban Development and the Environment presented the route map for the BRT system, also known as Metrobús, to be implemented on Avenida Hidalgo in Tampico.

Each station will serve strategic locations such as Avenida Ejército Mexicano, the Zona Dorada (Golden Zone), the airport, and neighborhoods in the northern part of the city. Authorities are currently working to define the dedicated bus routes and the areas where the buses will share the road with other vehicular traffic.

This system will have two terminals and 34 stations distributed along the main metropolitan thoroughfares. It is estimated that it will handle 118,000 trips daily, benefiting nearly one million residents, including users from northern Veracruz.

The project will have an investment of over 2.3 billion pesos, of which:

960 million will be contributed by the Government of Tamaulipas
650 million by the Federal Government
1.2 billion pesos will come from a Public-Private Partnership (PPP)
The mobility plan envisions 34 strategic points functioning as stops and main stations, where feeder routes will be integrated, connecting various sectors of Tampico, Madero, and Altamira.

The Tampico Metrobús represents a watershed moment in mobility for southern Tamaulipas, integrating technology, connectivity, and sustainability.

Furthermore, the new system will feature modern and eco-friendly vehicles, with dedicated lanes and universally accessible stations.

With this system, the metropolitan area aims to position itself as a region with efficient and safe public transportation, on par with the country’s major cities.

On the other hand, the current routes that run along Hidalgo Avenue will cease to operate as a main relief route, reducing traffic congestion and allowing for a more fluid and orderly flow of traffic.
