Mérida’s explosive urban growth is clearly reflected in the demand for housing: formal developers registered with the National Chamber of the Housing Development and Promotion Industry (Canadevi) are currently undertaking 125 real estate developments in the Yucatecan capital.
The private organization, headed by Mauricio Morales Greene, specified that this number does not include other developments being built in municipalities throughout the state, informal construction projects, or those undertaken through the federal affordable housing program.
The National Housing Commission announced on several occasions that the Housing for Well-being Program will construct approximately 50,000 homes in Mérida, Kanasín, Umán, Progreso, Tizimín, and Ticul: 40,000 for workers earning between one and two minimum wages, and an additional 10,000 social housing units.
