200 Va y Ven buses out of service in Yucatán

The president of the Board of Directors of Circuito Metropolitano, David Esteban Quintal Medina, warned that the lack of resources to operate new units for the Va y Ven system is keeping approximately 200 new buses idle, many of which were intended to reinforce routes where service is still insufficient or practically nonexistent.

He explained that of these new units, 150 are parked at companies in Mérida and another 50 remain in the state of Querétaro, because the Yucatán Transportation Agency does not have the necessary budget to put them into operation. This situation is putting the brakes on the system’s expansion.

“We are stuck. They aren’t being brought in and they aren’t being activated because the budget isn’t enough and we can’t cover that operation,” Quintal Medina stated when asked about the fate of these units that remain inactive despite having already been assigned to new routes.

Similarly, the concessionaire indicated that this lack of liquidity has not only slowed the integration of new units but has also led to the return of several that had already been acquired. According to the information he received, at least 25 buses have already been returned to Mexico City.

Quintal Medina recalled that the recent public transportation assessment presented by the ATY (Tabasco Transportation Authority) identified that more than 200 older units are still in service because the new ones have not yet been put into operation.

However, he warned that until a sufficient and sustainable budget is secured, the modernization of the system will remain incomplete.

“From what I’ve been told, about 25 units have been returned. That’s the situation. There’s no point in bringing them in if we don’t have good service or the resources to operate them. The investment has been made; what’s missing is the ability to put them into service,” he stated.

The businessman mentioned that this problem requires proper financial planning to prevent it from happening again in 2026. He said that the concessionaires have requested to participate directly in shaping the budget allocated to the Transportation Agency, in order to prevent further delays in the incorporation of new units.
