Finland inaugurated a new honorary consulate with jurisdiction over the states of Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Yucatán, which will operate from the facilities of the English School in Playa del Carmen. The objective is to provide diplomatic assistance to Finnish citizens residing in or visiting the region, as well as to promote collaborative projects, including the utilization of sargassum seaweed.

The businesswoman and CEO of Corporativo MEGUZ was appointed Honorary Consul of Finland for the Yucatán Peninsula, and assumed the position on November 20th during a ceremony held at the school, which will serve as the consular headquarters.

Owner of seven companies in the Education and Technology sectors in the Riviera Maya and Tulum, Guzmán explained that the consulate had been vacant for two years, following the resignation of the previous representative, so the Finnish government initiated a process to select a new consul, and she was chosen.

Eight candidates from the three countries participated in the selection process, and she held several interviews with Finnish and Mexican authorities before her appointment.

She said her work will not only be administrative, focused on document certification, assisting Finnish citizens, and replacing or extending lost passports, but will also involve expanding the bilateral relationship to include cooperation projects between Finland and the Yucatán Peninsula in the areas of education, the environment, technology, and business.

Finland, for example, is interested in sharing academic training models and professional development programs for students, teachers, and administrators in Mexico. The consul expressed her intention to facilitate educational exchanges and institutional partnerships between the two countries.
