Salinas Pliego will sell Mazatlán and Puebla

Ricardo Salinas Pliego, owner of TV Azteca and the Mazatlán and Puebla soccer teams, is reportedly considering selling both clubs to finance his alleged 2030 presidential campaign. This decision comes amid the businessman’s increased political involvement and his intention to distance himself from professional soccer in Liga MX.

According to various media outlets, the Mazatlán Cañoneros could be sold for over $100 million, while Puebla’s La Franja would fetch $65 million. This would net Salinas Pliego around $165 million, money that could be used to fund his future political project.

Although neither team has the media reach of the so-called “Big Four” (América, Chivas, Pumas, and Cruz Azul), the sale of Mazatlán and Puebla represents a significant transaction within Mexican soccer and marks a major shift in the Liga MX ownership structure.

The likely date for the sale is after the 2026 World Cup, during the next Liga MX owners’ meeting. The new owners are expected to be officially introduced at that meeting, thus confirming the closing of an important chapter for both clubs and for the Mexican businessman.

Meanwhile, it has been leaked that Salinas Pliego intends to become involved in national politics, indicating that the sale of the teams would allow him to focus on his presidential aspirations. Although there is still no official confirmation of his candidacy, the financial transaction would provide him with significant resources for a large-scale campaign.

For now, neither the clubs nor the businessman have issued an official statement regarding the sale. However, the news is already generating excitement within Liga MX and among political analysts, who are closely observing Salinas Pliego’s moves and their potential impact on the Mexican sports and electoral landscape.
