How gasoline prices change in Mexico

After the elimination of the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), the National Energy Commission (CNE) became the sole regulatory body for the energy sector in Mexico in March 2025. The objective of this technical body is to regulate, supervise, and impose sanctions on energy-related activities.

The CNE’s mission is to guarantee sovereignty, security, and self-sufficiency in the sector, in accordance with the policy established by the Ministry of Energy (Sener). According to information from the Mexican government, the agency has the following main activities related to hydrocarbons:

Regulating prices and tariffs.

Granting permits to store, transport, and sell gasoline.

Maintaining public and up-to-date oversight of all these activities.

The organization does not operate in isolation; it coordinates with the Ministry of Energy (SENER) to maintain technical and operational autonomy, ensuring that all decisions are based on professional criteria.

The final price of gasoline is determined by production, distribution, and logistics costs, taxes, and the price of hydrocarbons in international markets. Fuels are a crucial component of the economy and a key factor in determining each country’s inflation rate.

At the beginning of 2025, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum and the business sector signed an agreement to regulate the price of Magna gasoline, setting a maximum of 24 pesos per liter.
