The Oaxaca State Commission for Protection Against Sanitary Risks (Coepriso), in coordination with the Clean Beaches Committees, reported that prior to the end-of-year holiday period, it is monitoring the microbiological quality of seawater at the state’s main tourist destinations.
For six days, specialized personnel from the Oaxaca Health Services (SSO) are taking samples at 17 beaches, which will be analyzed by the Oaxaca State Public Health Laboratory (LESP). The laboratory will then issue a report.
The sites included in this study are: Maguey, Bahía Santa Cruz, La Entrega, Chahué, La Bocana, Tangolunda, Puerto Escondido Main Beach, Panteón, Zipolite I, Zipolite II, Puerto Angelito, Carrizalillo, Marinero, Zicatela I, Zicatela II, Puerto Ángel Main Beach, and Bacocho.
The State Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Coepriso) explained that high concentrations of bacteria in seawater can cause skin diseases, conjunctivitis, mucous membrane irritations, and gastrointestinal illnesses in humans; therefore, periodic analyses are conducted.
Furthermore, it urged visitors and residents to dispose of trash in the containers provided and keep recreational areas clean in order to preserve these natural resources.
