The Oaxaca government announced that the Basilica of Our Lady of Solitude, located on Avenida de la Independencia in the state capital, has been given new, modern artistic lighting.
This project is part of the “Oaxaca Shines” program, which aims to install new lighting at various historical sites throughout the state, combining cutting-edge technology with respect for Oaxaca’s heritage.
For the new lighting of the Basilica of Our Lady of Solitude in Oaxaca, 72 state-of-the-art LED projectors were used, allowing for precise light direction to highlight the different architectural elements of the church.
Furthermore, thanks to this technology, current electricity consumption will be reduced by 55%, while respecting the historic building and enhancing its artistic details.
According to Sildia Mecott Gómez, Director General of the Institute of Cultural Heritage, the new lighting at the Basilica of Our Lady of Solitude brings the total number of buildings in Oaxaca receiving new illumination to three as part of the “Oaxaca Shines” program.
And these won’t be the only ones, as the official added that a total of 10 emblematic buildings in Oaxaca will receive new lighting, with the goal of improving the appearance of Oaxaca’s Historic Center.
Which buildings already have new lighting? In addition to the Basilica of Our Lady of Solitude, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán have also received new lighting.
And which ones are still pending? The churches of San Matías Jalatlaco, San Felipe Neri, the Precious Blood of Christ, the Church of the Society of Jesus, and the Church of San Agustín, as well as the Macedonio Alcalá Theater and the Government Palace of Oaxaca.
In the end, state authorities assured that the main objective is to promote the cultural richness of Oaxaca by placing lighting in heritage spaces, so that the state capital continues to distinguish itself as a tourist destination in Mexico.
