Due to numerous complaints from tourists and consumers, the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) conducted an operation in Tulum and ordered the closure of several establishments, including a luxury hotel owned by Roberto Palazuelos called Diamante K. In the case of the celebrity, the agency stated that he was committing several violations, including forced tips, offering menus only in English, and failing to display rates to consumers.

In recent months, there has been talk of a crisis in Tulum due to low tourist numbers. According to travelers, this is mainly due to the high cost of vacations, as lodging and food are expensive (in some cases, even paid for in dollars), which deters most visitors.

Following these complaints, Profeco carried out an operation to monitor and verify the basic products and tourist services offered by 29 establishments in the area. “In parallel with the actions carried out by the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) and the Government of Quintana Roo, the Consumer Protection Agency conducted price monitoring and surveys using the Who’s Who in Prices (QQP) program, through visits to 29 establishments: five supermarkets, five convenience stores, five pharmacies, five hotels, and nine restaurants and cafes,” the agency stated.

It added: “Among the findings, it was discovered that the average price of a single hotel room is $3,577.50 pesos, with a minimum of $1,200 and a maximum of $10,569 pesos. The “Hotel Mi Amor” registered the highest price in this category.”

Regarding the Diamante K hotel, owned by Roberto Palazuelos, Profeco (the Federal Consumer Protection Agency) stated that it was issued suspension orders due to “various violations of the Federal Consumer Protection Law (LFPC), including failure to display rates, lack of terms and conditions for services, encouragement of tipping, and absence of receipts or proof of lodging services; prices were not listed on the menu, or were displayed in foreign currency, and dishes were described in a language other than Spanish.”

The Diamante K hotel occupies one hectare within Tulum National Park and features 30 cabins with all the luxuries and amenities; lodging prices range from $353 USD per night.
