Gilberto Núñez Cruz, an artisan from Chiapas, will participate from November 27 to 30 in Original México, the most important textile event in Latin America, held at the Los Pinos Cultural Complex. He will exhibit 25 pieces created on a pedal loom, several of which have received recognition in state and national competitions.
Núñez Cruz, originally from San Cristóbal de Las Casas, emphasized that his presence at this year’s event is especially significant, as the pedal loom technique he has mastered is at risk of disappearing in his community due to a lack of new artisans. Among the works he will present are huipiles, rebozos, and sacks—pieces that have defined his style and become part of his creative identity.
The event will bring together more than 60 artisans from Chiapas, who will showcase works created using traditional techniques such as the backstrap loom, as well as amber pieces and other expressions representative of the state’s rich cultural heritage. For this edition, the Federal Ministry of Culture will promote the creation of a national catalog with the aim of expanding the opportunities for marketing and dissemination of artisanal work in Mexico.
