The work of the Mayan embroiderers of Yucatán is recognized in the book “Mayan Embroidery of Yucatán: Living Heritage,” a work resulting from the collaboration between the Yucatán Ministry of Culture and the Arts, UNESCO Mexico, and the Banorte Foundation.
During the book’s presentation, which also examines the process that consolidated Mayan embroidery as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Yucatán, at the Los Pinos Cultural Complex, the head of Culture for Yucatán, Patricia Martín Briceño, highlighted the role of the women embroiderers in the creation of this material.
“Thank you for transforming this project into a lesson for the country and a clear message that safeguarding cultural heritage is only possible when those who create it are also those who manage it.”
She also indicated that the book is a living testament to the significance of textile art in the various municipalities of Yucatán.
“This is more than a book; it’s a program, a project that transcends any administration, because it’s about lives, the economy, and our living heritage across the entire country.”
The Safeguarding Plan for Mayan Embroidery in Yucatán was also detailed, which consists of actions carried out in 23 municipalities by more than 400 embroiderers.
In this regard, they specified that it is a unique approach to implementing UNESCO policies on intangible cultural heritage.
