A new alliance between Mexico and Europe will make renewable and clean energy the central focus of the energy sector. The energy industry will not only ensure we have sufficient capacity to support the high consumption of new technologies, but it will also serve as a form of trade between nations. These are the projects and investments that 2026 holds for us.
To withstand the changes of the new era, we need sufficient, powerful, and especially renewable energy. We cannot repeat the mistakes of the past that promote the use of fossil fuels and pollution, because in a few years, we will pay the consequences.
For this reason, Mexico decided to seek a new ally, because if the United States is unwilling to promote green energy, they must find alternatives. Thus, Europe committed to an economic and energy alliance through the Mexico-EU forum held in Mexico City.
The meeting consolidates an energy, trade, and strategic alliance to promote green and renewable energy. The goal is to increase renewable energy production in Mexico by 40% by 2030. This will require significant investment from the private sector.
Since Musk warned of the chaos caused by an energy shortage, many nations have decided to address this issue at its root. According to authorities, the modernized EU-Mexico global agreement will be signed by February 2026 and promises major changes.
This agreement aims to attract more companies to energy investment by eliminating tariffs, which will improve costs and business processes. As long as agreements exist to promote these types of energy, more private companies will want to reap the benefits and join the plan.
The new agenda promises a collaborative framework that will strengthen not only the energy sector but also the automotive, agricultural, food, technology, and aerospace markets. It is a comprehensive trade agreement that will boost small businesses.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) no longer have to limit themselves to agreements with the United States simply because of its proximity; they now have options to expand globally. The goal is to increase competitiveness and encourage more industries to participate in the growth of this alliance.
Of course, one of the central issues is energy. As long as there is a balance between sustainability and social justice, the alliance with Europe will help develop more renewable energy sources in the country. We still have a long way to go to achieve a transformation of the electricity system.
The trend in Mexico in recent years has not been to prioritize green and renewable energy. A clear example of this is the controversial CFE contract to exploit black soils, a polluting source that will only set us back.
To reverse this situation, we must focus our investments and projects on clean and green renewable energy. For this reason, this agreement with Europe will be the first step toward expanding sources such as solar, wind, hydrogen, and geothermal.
Therefore, the union between Mexico and Europe may be the beginning of a new chapter where the energy transition will take center stage. The more green energy sources we have, the easier the journey toward a global transformation will be, where industries have incentives to use clean energy, as well as easy access to it. An energy future that can only be achieved through teamwork.
