Morelos is preparing to receive Mexican nationals returning from the United States during the holiday season, as they take advantage of this time to visit their families and complete paperwork. Verónica Giles Chávez, head of the Migration Institute in Morelos, explained that the 40 departments collaborating during this period have already organized themselves to implement Operation Paisano (Countryman Operation).
“We expect the arrival of approximately 2,500 to 3,000 Mexican nationals. We will also be providing support to the caravan coming from Texas, since we know that every year in December, families gather in Nuevo Laredo to cross the border and reach their destination,” she stated.
She added that, during this time, many of these individuals take the opportunity to obtain birth certificates or resolve pending matters, as well as make payments related to official procedures.
The state official noted that, as every year, information booths will be set up to assist those visiting their families, and emphasized that these will be located at the state’s main bus terminals.
“The assistance booths will be set up, as is customary during these holiday periods, at the main bus terminals in Morelos to offer support to our fellow citizens,” she stated.
Approximately 1,160 people from Morelos have been repatriated from the United States through August, due to the immigration policies of former President Donald Trump. Several of them have received support from the Morelos government to find employment, start a business, or join the tourist police.
Verónica Giles Chávez pointed out that not all repatriated individuals remain in Morelos, as some migrate to other states in the country. However, she indicated that they have provided assistance to approximately 60 people so far, supporting them in finding ways to reintegrate into the job market or strengthen their financial situation.
He explained that some of those returning have chosen to start businesses; others work as bus drivers, and still others have joined the tourist police, taking advantage of their fluency in English. He clarified that they will continue to provide assistance to those returning to the country, in order to connect them with jobs or opportunities that allow them to develop a productive project.
