In Campeche, femicide, intentional homicide, kidnapping, and drug dealing increased by an average of 53.7 percent between January and October 2025, compared to the same period in 2024.

According to figures from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, femicide saw the largest increase, rising from 5 to 9 cases this year, an 80 percent increase.

The Fact: Based on the National Survey of Victimization and Perception of Public Security (ENVIPE), it is estimated that 26.7 percent of households in the state of Campeche had at least one victim of crime during 2023.

Furthermore, drug dealing reports increased from 281 in 2024 to 331 this year, representing a 17.8 percent increase.

Kidnapping was another high-impact crime that saw an increase, as no cases were registered last year, while from January to October 2025, one case has already been reported. Similarly, intentional homicide increased by 17 percent, with cases rising from 76 to 89 this year.

In some cases, homicides have had a greater impact in the state governed by Layda Sansores. In one recent case, Karina Díaz, the municipal attorney for Palizada, was murdered while driving her vehicle on November 18.

In a statement, the Campeche Attorney General’s Office reported that agents from the State Investigation Agency went to the General Hospital, where a woman had been admitted with a gunshot wound. Without mentioning her name, the statement indicated that during the initial investigation, it was confirmed that the woman died while receiving medical attention.

In a statement, the municipal government of Palizada expressed its “sorrow and dismay” at the murder and stated its “full willingness to accompany and support the competent authorities of the state of Campeche in the investigations, trusting completely in their institutional capacity to clarify the facts with professionalism, transparency, and promptness, in order to guarantee justice for teacher Karina Aurora Díaz Hernández.”

In addition to being a trustee, Díaz Hernández, a member of the Morena party, was president of the City Council’s Education and Culture Committee and was a former Morena candidate for mayor of Palizada, but lost to Pedro Ayala Cámara of the Labor Party (PT).

In a more recent incident, two people were shot and seriously wounded on Santo Tomás Street in the Villas de Santa Ana subdivision of Ciudad del Carmen during the early hours of Sunday, prompting a response from emergency and security personnel.

According to local media, the victims were talking in front of a house when two men on a motorcycle opened fire directly on them.

Witnesses said the gunfire forced neighbors to take cover and alert the authorities. Minutes later, Civil Protection personnel arrived to provide assistance, and the victims were taken to the General Hospital under police guard.

Members of the Campeche State Attorney General’s Office, as well as members of the National Guard and the Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection, also arrived at the scene.

The increase in violence coincides with the results of the recent National Survey of Urban Public Security (ENVIPE), in which the perception of insecurity in the municipality of Campeche, the state’s largest and most populous city, registered a 23.3 percent increase.

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) revealed that in the third quarter of this year, the perception of insecurity in Campeche was 57.1 percent, while in the same period of 2024 the indicator was 46.3 percent, representing an increase of 23.3 percent.

Similarly, according to the 2025 National Survey of Victimization and Public Safety Perception (ENVIPE), it is estimated that 21.9% of households in the state of Campeche had at least one victim of crime during 2024.

The ENVIPE also indicates that in 2024, of the estimated 151,022 crimes in the state of Campeche, the victim was present in 50.5 percent of the cases, representing 76,296 crimes.
