At least 11,000 hectares of national land in Yucatán have ended up in private hands through document forgery, alteration of official records, and the likely complicity of state officials.
Latinus documented the illegal appropriation of at least 24 large national land parcels, which occurred during the administrations of Ivonne Ortega (2007-2012), then a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and now a congresswoman for the Citizens’ Movement party, and Rolando Zapata (2012-2018), currently a senator for the PRI.
In some cases, the large parcels were registered in the names of relatives of state officials. After being registered in private names, the land’s value increased exponentially through repeated sales, reaching 160 million pesos in one of the documented cases.
