In 2024, Zacatecas ranked among the five states with the lowest contribution to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP), at 1 percent, despite having the second-highest annual growth rate at 4.9 percent, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).
The national GDP at market prices was 33 trillion 506 billion 847 million pesos, comprised mainly of Mexico City’s contribution at 15 percent, followed by the State of Mexico (9.1%), Nuevo León (8.1%), Jalisco (7.5%), Guanajuato (4.5%), and others.
Those at the bottom of the list are: Tlaxcala with 0.6 percent; followed by Colima (0.6%); Nayarit (0.7%); Baja California Sur (0.8%); and Zacatecas (1.0%).
By economic activity, the gross value added (GVA) in the agriculture, livestock, forestry, fishing, and hunting sector at the national level represented 1 trillion 296 billion 530 million pesos.
Of this, Zacatecas joined 21 other states that accounted for 31 percent of this amount. The remaining 14.7 percent was contributed by Jalisco, followed by Michoacán (10.6%); Veracruz (7.3%); Chihuahua (6.5%); Sonora (5.8%); Sinaloa (5.5%); Guanajuato (5.2%); Puebla (4.0%); the State of Mexico (3.3%); Durango (3.1%); and Chiapas, with 2.9 percent.
In secondary activities, which include mining, manufacturing, construction, and the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity and natural gas pipelines to the end consumer, the Gross Value Added (GVA) was 10 trillion 383 billion 262 million pesos (current value).
Of this total, the state of Zacatecas ranked among the lowest, contributing only 35.7 percent, along with 21 other states.
The remainder was contributed primarily by Nuevo León (10.5%), the State of Mexico (7.8%), Jalisco (6.6%), Coahuila (6.0%), Guanajuato (5.5%), Baja California and Chihuahua (5.4%), Sonora (4.8%), Mexico City (4.5%), and Veracruz and Puebla (3.8% each).
