The Jalisco government intervenes to resolve the dispute between Tequila and José Cuervo

The José Cuervo Fábrica 1800 tequila distillery was placed under guard by state police officers to prevent any risks associated with its production processes.

Furthermore, negotiations are currently underway between the Tequila government and the company, with mediation from the Jalisco state government, reported the Secretary General of the Government, Salvador Zamora Zamora.

The official explained that part of the conflict arose from the collection of property taxes.

“The company estimated the property tax on the factory and considered it to be overvalued. Previous years’ figures were far lower than what the municipality proposed, and this resulted in them not obtaining their operating license.

The municipality had refused to grant it due to non-payment, while the company argued that the tax was excessive.”

Zamora indicated that the clauses the municipality attempted to impose last week sparked the controversy, leading to the intervention of the Secretary General of the Government to establish a working group and seek an agreement.

Currently, he said, an agreement is being signed to establish property tax payments in accordance with the law, so that the municipality can issue the corresponding permit. This agreement will be signed tomorrow at 8:00 a.m.

Last week, the Tequila Municipal Police guarded and blocked access to the José Cuervo Fábrica 1800 plant, which generated controversy and accusations of abuse of power by the mayor, Diego Rivera Navarro.
