The Oaxaca State Attorney General’s Office rescued 65 dogs Wednesday afternoon following a report from activists alleging animal abuse in the town of San Francisco Lachigoló, located 19 kilometers from the city of Oaxaca.

The activists reported the alleged existence of a clandestine slaughterhouse on the property. Members of the Animal Rescue Unit, belonging to the Regional Deputy Attorney General’s Office for the Central Valleys, went to the site and found the 65 dogs.

The Attorney General’s Office reported that the animals were placed under official custody and are being examined to determine their condition. One person was arrested for animal cruelty and is being held at the disposal of the public prosecutor to determine their legal status.

The operation took place at a residence located on the corner of Donají Alley and Zamora Street in that town, where authorities also reported finding “bone remains that presumably belong to vertebrate animals.” Forensic work is being carried out with a veterinary expert “to determine the origin of the remains and expand the ministerial investigation.”

Several activists gathered at the scene to support the case and also brought food for the rescued dogs.
