The tourism sector in this magical town expects to receive more than 40,000 visitors, with hotel occupancy reaching up to 90% during the Christmas holiday period.

The Municipal Director of Tourism, Juan de Dios Bermúdez Crocker, reported that tourism service providers are preparing to welcome visitors this holiday season.

“There are peak days; we’re currently at around 60% hotel occupancy, but we also have peak days that reach up to 90%. The season varies, but at least during Christmas, we expect more than 40,000 visitors on the main days,” he explained.

The official highlighted that San Cristóbal de las Casas is the third most visited state in southern Mexico, after Cancún and Oaxaca, and therefore already boasts a significant tourism infrastructure with more than 5,000 lodging options.

“There’s something for everyone and different categories, from hostels and inns to 1, 2, and 4-star hotels; Boutique hotels cater to all tastes in San Cristóbal.

Bermúdez Crocker explained that tourists traveling to other tourist destinations in Chiapas, such as Sumidero Canyon, Palenque, and Montebello Lakes, often stay overnight in this city.

“San Cristóbal de las Casas is a place where we can enjoy the gastronomy, the architecture, the hospitality of its people, the climate, the tourist centers, museums, and traditions—there is so much to discover.”

He mentioned that among the tourist attractions offered by this town in the Chiapas Highlands are the Mammoth Caves, El Arcotete, Rancho Nuevo, El Encuentro, and the San José Zoo. “The hotels are already prepared to receive tourists, as are the tourism service providers, restaurants, travel agencies, certified guides, and tourist centers. We just had a training session at the Rancho Nuevo caves.”

Finally, Bermúdez Crocker explained that they expect to exceed expectations for this holiday season compared to 2024. “Last year, yes, we had a decent number of visitors, but we hope that this year we can surpass expectations. We hope to increase the percentage for the benefit of all tourism service providers, with a positive economic impact.”
