Tense moments unfolded at Terminal 2 of the Cancún International Airport, where a police chase culminated in warning shots and the arrest of two armed men traveling in an armored SUV. The operation, which took place on Friday, generated panic among domestic and international tourists, although authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported.
According to official information, investigators spotted a Chevrolet Suburban speeding through the streets of Cancún. After signaling for the vehicle to stop, the driver and passenger ignored the order and fled, leading to a chase that extended to the airport complex.
The pursuit ended between gates 7 and 8 of Terminal 2, where, with the support of National Guard personnel, police managed to block the vehicle’s path. During the operation, and given the suspects’ alleged possession of firearms, officers fired warning shots to control the situation.
Witnesses reported that the police presence and gunfire caused alarm among passengers in the area, some of whom sought temporary refuge inside the terminal. Despite the tension, airport operations continued without interruption, under reinforced security.
After subduing the vehicle’s occupants, authorities secured the armored SUV, which had Level 5 Plus armor plating, as well as a loaded firearm and other evidence, all of which were turned over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office. The operation unfolded in a matter of minutes, although the police presence remained longer to ensure the safety of passengers and airport personnel.
Authorities did not report any direct exchange of gunfire, stating that the shots were fired preventively to neutralize the risk posed by a possible armed threat.
The two detainees were transferred to the facilities of the State Attorney General’s Office, located on Huayacán Avenue, one of the main thoroughfares in the tourist area of Cancún. So far, the identities of those arrested and any background information that might explain their armed presence in the area have not been released.
The Prosecutor’s Office has begun the corresponding investigations to determine the origin of the weapon, the legality of the vehicle’s armor plating, and the potential criminal liability of those detained. Authorities are keeping the motive for the incident confidential and are not yet aware of any connection to previous criminal activity in the region.
This case is part of a series of security operations implemented in tourist destinations in Quintana Roo, aimed at reinforcing surveillance in high-traffic areas and ensuring the safety of visitors and residents.
