A doctor was sentenced to two years in prison for manslaughter after being found responsible for the death of a minor in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur.

According to the court ruling, the events occurred in 2019 when the now-convicted doctor, Laura “N”, treated the minor at a private hospital in that municipality. She diagnosed her and prescribed medication, despite having laboratory tests, the results of which were ignored. Days later, on April 2 of that year, the girl was pronounced dead.

After the investigation was completed, the Baja California Sur State Attorney General’s Office (PGJE) took the case to trial, presenting expert evidence and arguments that led the Single-Judge Court to determine the doctor’s criminal responsibility for manslaughter.

The Baja California Attorney General’s Office (PGJE) confirmed today that, in this case, it obtained a conviction and a two-year prison sentence, along with an order to pay 513,400 pesos in damages.

Last year, at least two other legal proceedings involving medical personnel for alleged negligence in patient care were also made public.

In May, the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) reported that a doctor in La Paz, Marisela “N,” was formally charged with negligent injury related to her professional responsibility, following a complaint filed by the parents of a minor who suffered a permanent disability.

According to the investigation, the girl was not evaluated or treated in a timely manner, resulting in irreversible damage to her health. The legal proceedings in this case are ongoing.

In August, authorities confirmed that a doctor, Francisco “N”, in the town of Ciudad Constitución, municipality of Comondú, was sentenced to three years in prison for manslaughter, after malpractice was proven that resulted in the death of a patient in a municipal health institute.
