A criminal court judge ordered the temporary suspension of two officers from the Castaños Municipal Police, accused of extorting a man traveling on Federal Highway 57.
The incident occurred on December 16th, when Karen Anahí “N”, from Frontera, and Abraham Daniel “N”, from Monclova, who were on duty in patrol car number 08, stopped Ramiro “N”, who was traveling from Querétaro.
The driver was returning from Piedras Negras, where he had picked up relatives from the United States.
According to the complaint, the officers demanded money from the victim and threatened to plant drugs on him, arrest him, and turn him over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office if he did not hand over the cash. Fearing reprisals, a relative of Ramiro “N”, in the United States, made an electronic transfer of one thousand dollars, equivalent to almost 18,000 pesos.
Later, the victim reported the incident at a security checkpoint in Ramos Arizpe, providing the officers’ physical descriptions and the unit number. Following the report, officers from the Central Region Group were dispatched and located the officers in question.
During the intervention, Abraham Daniel “N” allegedly offered $400 to avoid arrest, while Karen Anahí “N” attempted to hand over $300, arguing that their arrest could have serious consequences. Both were detained and turned over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, where $700 in cash was seized as evidence.
The officers were brought before a judge, who ordered their suspension to prevent further extortion attempts. They were also required to post bail of 10,000 pesos each to remain free pending trial. A hearing to determine whether or not they will be formally charged is scheduled for December 24.
