The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) filed 43 complaints with the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) against gas stations that sold short liters of fuel, an illegal practice that harms the finances of millions of motorists in the country.

These actions are part of the Extraordinary Verification Operation, implemented within the National Strategy to Promote Gasoline Price Stabilization, in which Profeco and the Agency for Safety, Energy and the Environment (ASEA) participated. During the inspections, 230 gas stations were reviewed in various states across the country.

As a result, Profeco seized 780 measuring instruments that did not comply with regulations, while ASEA temporarily closed 161 gas stations for environmental and operational safety violations.

The federal authority emphasized that selling short liters constitutes a crime, as it represents direct fraud against consumers. Therefore, the most serious irregularities detected resulted in criminal complaints filed with the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).

Although the operation concluded on December 16, Profeco warned that routine inspections will continue throughout the country and that any station engaging in illegal practices will be sanctioned or reported, as appropriate.

Finally, the agency highlighted that, thanks to the national strategy, the price of regular gasoline remained stable and registered a 4% reduction, falling from 24.80 pesos in February to 23.82 pesos in December, which represents some relief for household budgets.
