Seven men are missing and three women were injured following attacks by armed individuals on two bars in the municipality of Villaflores, Chiapas, according to the state prosecutor of that southern Mexican state.

The incidents occurred early Saturday morning when the attackers arrived in the town in several vehicles, opened fire, and set some cars on fire, the prosecutor explained.

“We have made progress with some technological data. We were able to establish that those who committed this act were three pickup trucks carrying armed individuals who entered the municipality of Villaflores at around 3:00 a.m.,” he said.

According to the prosecutor, two of the missing men were allegedly the owners of the attacked bars. The Prosecutor’s Office issued missing person alerts for them and the other five missing individuals.

Regarding the injured women, the prosecutor said they were taken to hospitals for medical treatment.

“We can establish the primary motive for these tragic events as a dispute over drug dealing between two cells operating in the area,” the prosecutor stated, adding that an operation involving 200 officers from various agencies was deployed to search for the missing persons and apprehend the perpetrators.

Mexican security authorities say that the Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation cartels, as well as local criminal groups vying for control of drug and migrant trafficking routes and other illicit activities, are present in Chiapas, a state bordering Guatemala.

From January to November of this year, 343 intentional homicides were recorded in Chiapas, a figure that represents a 58% decrease compared to the same period in 2014, when there were 818, according to official statistics.

In contrast, 126 cases of extortion were recorded, which implies an increase of 600% compared to 2024, when there were 18.
