Hailstorms have surprised the municipalities of Unión Juárez and Comitán de Domínguez, Chiapas, in recent hours, but so far no damage has been reported, according to authorities.
This Monday, the Unión Juárez City Council announced the closure of the ascent to the Tacaná Volcano, which is shared by Mexico and Guatemala, as rain and hail have made trail conditions difficult and reduced visibility.
Mayor Fabián Barrios de León explained that the measure is preventative to guarantee the safety of visitors to the Biosphere Reserve, as the current situation increases the risk of accidents.
According to some estimates, around five thousand mountaineers visit this site, which stands at over 4,000 meters above sea level, during the Christmas season.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, the city of Comitán de Domínguez, in the Meseta-Comiteca region, was also hit by a hailstorm.
Civil Protection reported that it assisted residents in removing ice from their roofs to prevent potential damage and also in draining floodwaters caused by the rain in at least four homes in the Los Laureles and Los Sabinos neighborhoods.
According to the official report, the water level reached 15 centimeters. Additionally, some roads were cordoned off as a precaution to avoid risks to motorists.
According to Civil Protection, the state will experience rain and a drop in temperatures associated with Cold Front 25, causing a low-pressure system and possible storms.
