A municipal traffic officer was caught on camera struggling with civilians Saturday night in downtown Cabo San Lucas. The video of the altercation went viral on social media.
The footage shows the officer holding a man by the neck in the heart of Cabo San Lucas, while bystanders yell at him to let go. Some witnesses shouted at him, “Let him go, you can’t do that,” and “You’re choking him,” alluding to a suspected extortion attempt.
A woman present at the scene confronted the officer, telling him he couldn’t act that way as a traffic officer. Another person claimed the officer had demanded 1,000 pesos in exchange for letting them go, though neither agreed to pay.
The altercation occurred during peak tourist season, when Los Cabos, particularly Cabo San Lucas, receives many national and international tourists for the New Year’s celebrations.
As of now, Los Cabos municipal authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the incident or any potential sanctions against the officer involved.
