Yucatán, in the Top 20 of states with the most cases of syphilis

The outbreak of syphilis acquired in Yucatán has placed the state among the 20 with the highest incidence nationwide, with 420 cases confirmed so far this year, the highest figure in the last 14 years,
according to a report from the Federal Ministry of Health.

The agency warned that this is a nationwide phenomenon that also significantly impacts the Yucatán Peninsula, where 1,290 cases have been confirmed, equivalent to 6.19 percent of the national total.

Nationwide, 20,843 cases of acquired syphilis have been recorded to date, representing an 18.02 percent increase compared to the same period in 2014, when 17,660 infections were reported.

The states with the highest incidence are Jalisco, with 2,114 infected individuals, equivalent to 10.14% of the national total; Mexico City, with 1,908 cases (9.15%), and Tamaulipas, with 1,268 cases (6.08%), have the highest numbers of infections.

At the other end of the spectrum are Tlaxcala, with 86 confirmed cases (0.41%); Zacatecas, with 118 (0.57%); and Morelos, with 127 diagnoses, equivalent to 0.61% of the national total.

Within the Yucatán Peninsula, Quintana Roo ranks 12th nationally, with 626 confirmed cases, representing a 42.27% increase and accounting for three percent of the country’s total. Yucatán is in 20th place, with 420 patients, a figure that represents a 33.76% increase compared to 2014, when 314 cases were recorded.

With this number, the state has already surpassed the 2022 record, when 406 people were affected, while the recent historical low was observed in 2020, with 133 diagnosed cases. Campeche ranks 26th, with 244 confirmed cases, following a 27.75% increase, representing 1.17% of the national total.

Regarding gender distribution, nationally, 11,752 men (56.38%) and 9,091 women (43.62%) have been infected. In Yucatán, 297 cases correspond to men (70.71%) and 123 to women (29.28%).

Finally, the federal agency reported that there are 11 illnesses with record annual incidence rates, including bee and other arthropod stings; dog bites, whooping cough, type 1 diabetes, leptospirosis, gingivitis, viral hepatitis B, and liver cirrhosis.
