Mexico on Saturday strongly condemned the United States’ military attack on Venezuela, which included actions in Caracas and other cities, and resulted in the capture of Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. The country also urged the United Nations to take immediate action.

“The Government of Mexico condemns and strongly rejects the military actions carried out unilaterally in recent hours by the armed forces of the United States of America against targets in the territory of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in clear violation of Article 2 of the Charter of the United Nations,” stated a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, shared by President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Therefore, Mexico urged “the United Nations to act immediately to contribute to de-escalating tensions, facilitate dialogue, and create conditions that allow for a peaceful and sustainable solution in accordance with international law.”

The Mexican Foreign Ministry statement also emphasized that “Latin America and the Caribbean is a zone of peace, built on the foundation of mutual respect,” and warned that “any military action seriously jeopardizes regional stability.”

US President Donald Trump confirmed on Saturday that the United States had “successfully carried out a large-scale attack against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolás Maduro, who, along with his wife, was captured and airlifted out of the country.”

The Venezuelan government requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Saturday, following US airstrikes in various parts of the South American country, including Caracas.

Meanwhile, Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez stated that the whereabouts of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are unknown.
