The earthquake, which struck at 7:58 a.m. local time, was centered off the coast of Guerrero state in the Pacific, but its effects were felt in Mexico City, where seismic alarms sounded.
According to the EFE news agency, initially no serious material damage or loss of life was reported, although hours later the Benito Juárez borough reported the death of a 67-year-old man who tripped while evacuating his apartment.
The death of a 50-year-old woman in the municipality of San Marcos, Guerrero state, was also reported after the roof of her home collapsed following the earthquake.
The governor of Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado, also indicated that 12 people were injured and two buildings were being assessed for risk of collapse.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was holding her usual morning press conference with journalists on Friday when she asked everyone present to evacuate after the seismic alarm sounded.
Upon returning to the building, the president said she had spoken with the governor of Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado: “They are convening the Civil Protection Council, and so far it appears there is no serious damage.”
In any case, the mayor of San Marcos, a town near the epicenter of the earthquake, said that approximately 500 homes, most of them rustic structures, were affected.
