Starting January 9, 2026, there will be significant changes to cell phone lines related to identification. We’ll tell you what you need to do.
It’s worth remembering that on December 8, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (CRT) issued new guidelines for mobile phone line identification, which will allow each phone line to be linked to an individual or legal entity.
This measure aims to eliminate the anonymity that allows this service to be used to commit crimes.
The CRT explained that this new regulation formalizes the registration already carried out by operators for postpaid service and aligns with international best practices to restore trust in cell phone service.
It is important to emphasize that the information will be protected by the telephone operators and will comply with the provisions of the Federal Law on the Protection of Personal Data Held by Private Parties.
Mobile phone users must present the following identification documents to link their phone lines:
Individual: Voter ID or passport and CURP (Unique Population Registry Code). Legal entities: Must present their Federal Taxpayer Registry (RFC).

Remember that mobile phone line identification will take effect on January 9th; users have until June 29, 2026, to complete the process. Otherwise, starting June 30th, all unlinked lines will be suspended until they are linked.
All phone lines of users who do not complete this process will remain without service until they complete the linking and will only be able to make emergency calls. Depending on the company, the process can be completed:
In person: At any customer service center nationwide.
By official regulation, a maximum of 10 lines can be linked per user. The person who completes the linking will be responsible for the use of the associated line.
