Transfers, deposits, and withdrawals in Mexico will change in 2026; banks will require a new biometric document.

With the goal of continuing to combat financial crimes in Mexico, such as fraud, theft of personal data, and extortion, the Mexican Banking Association (ABM) announced that transfers, deposits, and withdrawals will change starting in 2026.

ABM President Emilio Romano explained that to carry out these banking transactions, users will be required to provide, at a minimum, biometric data and a valid official ID; however, this will only apply to certain users.

Will Banks Require Biometric CURP?

With the aim of improving financial cybersecurity in Mexico, the ABM stipulated that all banks in the country will now be required to request a valid official photo ID from their clients, as well as biometric data (iris scan, fingerprint, electronic signature, or biometric CURP).

However, these requirements will only be necessary when banking transactions exceed 140,000 Mexican pesos (MXN). The president of the Mexican Banking Association (ABM) explained that this regulation was adopted to improve the traceability of funds in all deposits held in central bank accounts and to prevent money laundering and financial fraud.

Emilio Romano also emphasized that this measure will not affect the majority of the population, as it will only apply to users who carry out these large financial transactions and will only be implemented in person at each bank branch.

Regarding SPEI transfers, Romano explained that they will continue to operate normally, but those exceeding 15,000 Mexican pesos (MXN) must be authorized by the bank, and a special tax will be charged.

When does this new regulation take effect?

This new security regulation will take effect on July 1, 2026, while by June 2027, all international transfers can only be made to—or received from—account holders previously identified by their bank.

Biometric CURP: Where to Apply?

Starting January 8, 2026, all Mexicans will be able to apply for their biometric CURP at the service centers set up by the National Population Registry (Renepo). In Mexico City, you can find the offices at Londres Street, #102, Colonia Juárez, Cuauhtémoc borough.
