Mexico must show the world that it is fighting crime: Kenia López

In response to the latest threats from the President of the United States against Mexico, threatening to launch “ground attacks” against organized crime, the most important thing is to defend national sovereignty while simultaneously combating crime, but this is a task that falls exclusively to Mexicans, emphasized Kenia López, President of the Chamber of Deputies.

“The sovereignty of our country must be our priority. It is clear that it is up to us Mexicans to combat crime, and yes, we must combat crime. It is necessary that organized crime cease to have influence in many municipalities, in many territories,” she stated.

In statements made at the parliamentary building, she acknowledged that, as the US president has indicated and as the opposition in the country has denounced, criminal groups must stop dominating the areas of the country where they operate extensively.

However, she stressed, the obligation to put a stop to this rests solely with national authorities, not with foreign countries.

“Clearly we need to stop the criminals, clearly we need the cartels to stop killing and giving orders, but it’s up to us, the Mexican people. If I may be precise, it’s up to the institutions in our country.

It’s up to the legislators to create sufficient laws so that organized crime is punished. It’s up to the Executive branch, the Judiciary, all three branches of government in our country to combat crime; it’s necessary and obligatory, but it’s up to us Mexicans,” she emphasized.

Congresswoman López Rabadán expressed her support for Mexico also safeguarding the renegotiation of the USMCA and making it clear to its partners in the United States, Canada, and the rest of the world that it will combat and stop crime.

It is essential to demonstrate that organized crime will be combated and that it will not be allowed to continue seizing territories, because, unfortunately, she warned, criminality was allowed to operate unchecked. There was a fight that “was lost,” she added.

When asked directly whether the electoral reform being discussed in Congress should be a mechanism to close the door on organized crime’s interference in elections—through money, pressure, and the imposition of candidates—the congresswoman from the National Action Party (PAN) agreed.

“And the electoral reform is a great opportunity to tell the United States and the entire world that we are a democratic country, a country of institutions. It is a great opportunity to demonstrate that there is pluralism in this country.

To do things differently, to try to harm opposition parties, to try to harm minorities, to try to continue with overrepresentation, to try to silence millions of Mexicans who vote differently, would be a grave historical error,” she warned.

La reforma electoral es una oportunidad para demostrar al mundo que México es un país democrático.
