These criminal groups have been designated as “Terrorist Groups” by U.S. authorities, a designation that, according to the White House occupant, identifies them as potential targets for attack.
Investigations by Mexican authorities indicate that these territories are operational sites for these criminal groups, where they control not only drug trafficking but also other illicit activities such as kidnapping and extortion.
Similarly, these groups have splintered, and these divisions or fractures have, in themselves, generated even smaller, more violent groups. Reports from authorities indicate that the Sinaloa Cartel (recently divided into the “La Mayiza” and “Los Chapitos” factions) continues to be the main operator of criminal activities, along with the growing Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
The Sinaloa Cartel’s presence is concentrated in the northwestern part of the country, in areas such as Sonora, Sinaloa, Durango, Zacatecas, and Querétaro, with some operations also in municipalities of southern states like Chiapas and Oaxaca.
The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) has most of its operations in Jalisco, Nayarit, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes, and Veracruz, as well as some municipalities in San Luis Potosí and large parts of Veracruz and Tabasco.
Another criminal group with a significant presence is the Juárez Cartel, which occupies most of Chihuahua and controls a crucial portion of the border with the United States. The rest of the country is divided among groups such as the Northeast Cartel, the Gulf Cartel, La Familia Michoacana, and local groups.
