According to reports and testimonies, two children, approximately 6 and 8 years old, were living in unsanitary and precarious conditions, which generated concern among neighbors, prompting them to inform the authorities.

Following a complaint from neighbors, the Valladolid DIF (System for the Integral Development of the Family) and the Office of the Attorney for the Protection of Children and Adolescents (Prodennay) intervened to stop a case of child abuse and neglect in the Zaciabil neighborhood of Valladolid, Yucatán.

Personnel from the aforementioned agencies confirmed that the children were living in a house with a large amount of garbage, and that they showed signs of malnutrition and lack of hygiene. Neighbors have also shared evidence of this on social media.

Furthermore, neighbors indicated that the children are frequently seen walking alone in the streets late at night asking for food, a situation that puts their physical and emotional well-being at risk.

They reported that the children’s parents are drug addicts and are always on the streets collecting plastic and stealing things to sell to neighbors.

Authorities implemented child protection protocols, and as a preventative measure, the children were taken into protective custody and transferred to a safe space, where they will receive comprehensive care while their family, social, and legal situations are evaluated.

The children’s health status and the legal status of their guardians are unknown.
