Nine kilometers offshore from the Caribbean coast of Córdoba lies a small paradise that few know about. Tortuguilla Island, the department’s only island territory, is beginning to emerge as a tourist destination thanks to the “Córdoba is Unique” campaign spearheaded by David and Nicolás Barguil.
David Barguil, a Senate candidate, and Nicolás Barguil, a candidate for the House of Representatives, toured this corner of the island, located within the jurisdiction of Puerto Escondido, to showcase its natural attractions to national and international visitors.
This coral formation covers 14 hectares with depths of up to 10 meters. Its conditions allow for snorkeling with basic equipment, paddleboarding, observing marine life, and traditional fishing. Cultural performances and concerts have also been held in the surrounding area.
Its distance from conventional tourist destinations and the lack of commercial development have kept the island off the beaten track. Now, the candidates propose transforming it into an economic engine for Puerto Escondido through a community-based tourism model.
The proposal envisions developing tourism services by partnering with organized neighborhood groups, small businesses, and local entities to manage operations, sales, and administration of the activities offered by the natural environment.
Reaching Tortuguilla requires embarking from the shores of Puerto Escondido. Fishermen and other workers in the sector can increase their earnings by transporting visitors to the island daily.
The location combines seascapes with the expressions of bullerengue, a traditional musical genre that characterizes this coastal municipality and reinforces the cultural identity of Córdoba.
