A couple of shopkeepers from Michoacán were found murdered and burned in the state of Guanajuato, after being kidnapped on January 3.
According to information from the Michoacán Attorney General’s Office (FGE), the victims are Raúl Lara Lemus and Damaris Contreras Cervantes, 45 and 30 years old, respectively.
The couple was presumably abducted by an armed group that broke into their home at 2:00 a.m. on January 3. The home was located in the center of the Michoacán municipality of Puruándiro, which borders Guanajuato.
The perpetrators left the couple’s young son in the area. He was cared for by neighbors and then handed over to relatives of the victims.
The couple’s bodies were found burned days later in Guanajuato; however, it wasn’t until Tuesday that the Guanajuato Attorney General’s Office identified the victims through DNA testing.
So far, authorities have not reported any arrests, and prosecutors from both states are collaborating to try to establish the motive for the crime.
It should be noted that the couple apparently owned an ice cream shop, so the possibility that the crime is related to extortion by organized crime is also being investigated.
This case comes on the heels of the murder of three members of a family of Mexican Sign Language interpreters, which occurred on January 15 in Morelia. Their bodies were burned and found two days later on the side of the Mexico-Morelia-Guadalajara highway, in the Michoacán municipality of Zinapécuaro.
