Following the publication of the agreement in the State Official Gazette and after more than a year of negotiations, the fare increase for urban and suburban public transportation in San Miguel de Allende is now a reality and will begin to be implemented.
The agreement stipulates that concession holders commit to fulfilling four points, including adapting to a new image established by the authorities, as well as maintaining the vehicles in good condition.
In the urban area, the fare increased from 8 to 10 pesos, with a preferential rate of 6 pesos for senior citizens, people with disabilities, and students with ID.
The two-peso increase across the 28 routes that cover urban and suburban service was finalized with the publication of the agreement in the Official Gazette, after authorization from the City Council and following an agreement with the transportation operators, who made a series of commitments.
The agreement stipulates that concession holders must guarantee the quality, safety, regularity, and continuity of service on fixed routes. They must also improve the performance and image of their drivers by requiring them to wear uniforms, provide preventive and corrective maintenance for the buses, redesign the service’s image in conjunction with the authorities, and implement the color scheme determined by the government.
Furthermore, the use and playback of loud music or music whose content incites violence, denigrates, or discriminates against people will be restricted, in order to also prevent the use of buses for electoral campaigns.
Among the public, the fare increase has generated mixed opinions. While some consider the adjustment fair, noting that fares haven’t increased in over 10 years, others warn that they will be monitoring compliance with the agreements, as the poor condition of the buses and the drivers’ behavior are recurring complaints.
