El Pinacate, Puerto Penasco, the Las Misiones route, and the petroglyphs aroused the greatest interest among European agencies during the tourism fair in Madrid.
HERMOSILLO, SONORA. – The El Pinacate biosphere reserve, Puerto Peñasco, the Las Misiones route, the petroglyphs of Caborca, Trincheras, and the bacanora were the tourist attractions that attracted the most attention at the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) 2026.
Julio César Rascón Torres, president of the National Association of Tour Operators in Mexico (Antomex), reported that during the meeting with the world tourism sector, held from January 21 to 23 in Madrid, Spain, the northern part of the state was what sold the most among the attendees, along with the bacanora.
He pointed out that they offered packages of up to 15 days, in which vacationers can visit destinations such as El Pinacate, Puerto Peñasco, Kino Bay, Shark Island, San Carlos, Alamos, Mazatán , and other places.
” They also asked us a lot for the connection of San Carlos with Ciudad Obregón and Álamos. So, in that order, are the packages and the beach program that we have with El Colorado, the Dunes of San Nicolás, Isla del Tiburón and San Carlos, and the route of the Novillo we bring in third place of sale,” he said.
The International Tourism Fair, he said, brought together more than 145 countries, which was attended by more than 500 visitors, and Sonora had around 45 appointments with agencies from Europe, Italy, and Spain, mainly interested in getting to know the state.
Among the attendees, he said, there were Mexicans living in Spain who had distillers and showed interest in bacanora to sell it, noting that the flavor is different from tequila and mezcal.
“Sonora is prepared to receive these tourists; there are hotels, there are vans in good condition, there are places where they can receive them, and it is safe to travel,” he said.
This year, he added, the guided tour of the Las Misiones route was resumed, where they expect to increase the influx of tourists by 10% compared to the previous year, and by 2027, the increase will be 100% with the agreement they made with the Religious Tourism Network.
