Several injured and vandalized vehicles is the balance of a brawl between Catholic and evangelical transporters registered in the municipal capital of Chanal, where residents reported that foreign transporters who travel the roads to San Cristóbal were physically assaulted and firearms detonations were heard.
According to reports, the events generated alarm among the inhabitants, who demand that the municipal president and the justice of the peace and indigenous conciliation apply justice, since otherwise they could prevent the celebrations of the Virgin of Candelaria, which are celebrated from this day February 1 and 2. They also urge the authorities to take action on the matter immediately before the situation gets out of control.
The scuffle took place last Saturday night, when Catholic transporters, in their urban modality, surprisingly attacked evangelical transporters in their taxi modality. Faced with this situation, the evangelicals demand that the municipal president, the justice of the peace, and the indigenous conciliation arrest those responsible, since they assure that they are fully identified and are the ones who have provoked clashes in the Tseltal indigenous municipality, located in the Altos region of Chiapas.
“We demand that the president and the justice of the peace and conciliation take action on the matter, we have six vandalized cars and three seriously injured, gunshots were heard, if there is no justice then the celebration of today and tomorrow in Chanal will be prevented, we are with the injured in a hospital in San Cristóbal de las Casas, they are receiving medical attention from doctors, but yes, we demand that justice be done for the pastor who was injured,” the evangelicals mentioned.
Finally, until this Sunday morning there is no pronouncement by the authorities of the municipality, while the residents are afraid to go out to the streets to prevent them from being the object of any aggression, since from today the festivities of the Virgin of Candelaria begin, so there will be a presence in the central park to celebrate the image.
The evangelicals warned that if those responsible are not arrested, the situation could get out of control this day, since the municipal president and the judge know perfectly well who the aggressors are.
“We want justice to be done, we are accompanying the injured in the hospital, we demand that justice be applied in Chanal, and the authorities know who those who attacked us are,” concluded one of the evangelicals.
