All of Mexico is looking towards Sonora: It’s not the Olinia, but it will be 100% electric and made in the country

Mexico was captivated by Olinia’s electric car. Now, it’s experiencing the same phenomenon with the Sonora model, a 100% electric vehicle made in Mexico. It’s worth noting that Olinia stands out as a 100% Mexican-made electric vehicle designed specifically for urban and neighborhood commutes. It’s unlike the other electric cars you might find at any dealership. Its architecture isn’t sophisticated or refined. It doesn’t aim to impress. Rather, it embraces simplicity and low-cost components. It seeks to fulfill its function without breaking the bank for Mexican citizens.

After the announcement of the best electric cars of 2026 in Mexico, Olinia has emerged as the year’s great hope. Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum has already publicly stated that this car will be the most affordable on the Mexican market. Its design has been meticulously crafted to transform the way people get around in different cities across the country.

The primary goal is for it to be a vehicle capable of replacing the motorcycle taxis and small cargo vehicles seen in historic city centers. The technology employed will focus on short trips, narrow streets, and high-traffic pedestrian areas, providing a safe and sustainable option. The manufacturing process will utilize locally sourced components and a workforce of professors and researchers from the Technological Institute of Puebla, the National Polytechnic Institute, and other institutions across the country.

Although still in the design phase, it is known that it will have three versions (personal, motorcycle taxi, and cargo) that can recharge their batteries using standard household outlets, with a range of 100 kilometers and a speed limited to 50 km/h. The prototype is expected to be ready by mid-2026.

If Olinia has managed to capture attention and applause, how could the same not happen with Sonora? The Sonora model has already unveiled its first physical prototype. This is a project spearheaded by Beyond Borders Automotive Mexico, titled Beyond Shared Mobility, with an initial investment of $115 million. Operations are scheduled to begin in late 2027 or early 2028.

While no electric car of this type is yet ready for road use, it’s clear that the rendering stage has been surpassed. The company has already reached the presentation phase with a non-functional concept prototype of the ShowCar. This model provides a visual and technical basis for what the final production model will offer.

From its strategic location, Beyond Borders Automotive Mexico aims to integrate at least 80 suppliers from Sonora, who already provide parts to automotive plants in other parts of the world. The goal is to leverage their experience to deliver optimal components and services for vehicle production. Having the support of the Sonora government is a key part of this progress. The plan is perfectly aligned with the Mexico and Sonora Sustainable Development Plans. Furthermore, this project represents a strong commitment to investment, employment, and innovation.

Another electric vehicle of this type is Totalmente Tlaxcalteca, whose shared vision with Olinia offers economical, short, and urban routes. With an announced price of $100,000, it stands out as a competitive alternative to motorcycles or conventional combustion engine vehicles. Beyond Movilidad Compartida has a car designed to carry more than four people. This is a different approach from Olinia and TT, which focus on vehicles for two to four occupants and purely urban use.
